3D Modelling at the British Museum

Teaming up with the British Museum we held training for 14-25 year-olds during the CBA’s 2019 Festival of Archaeology. Everyone there had the opportunity to spend the day at the museum, working with staff to explore how technology is used to investigate and record artefacts from across the world.

We began the process by choosing sculptures and monuments to photograph in the galleries. Each group took a series of photos from different angles covering 360 degrees (where possible) to create 3D models. You can have a look at the finished scans (including a dog sculpture) on the YAC blog!

Osteoarchaeology Training in North Lincolnshire - what did we get up to?

In partnership with The Society for the Study of Childhood in the Past (SSCIP) we delivered a free training session tailored for 14-25 year-olds, to learn about the lives of the children who lived in medieval Barton, through an examination of their skeletal remains, excavated around St Peter’s Church.

We learnt how to lay out a skeleton, identify different bones, spot evidence of disease and occasionally signs of trauma. We also had the opportunity to learn how to age a skeleton by looking at bone fusion and tooth eruption.

YAC Leaders' Weekend 2019: Oakham Castle

During a busy YAC Leaders’ Weekend 2019, we had the opportunity to work with staff from the Univerisity of Leicester Archaeology Service on their community excavation at Oakham Castle.

We worked on all aspects from being in the trench and learning various post-excavation skills, excavating the 13th-14th century building, possibly a bakery or brewhouse, washing and processing the finds from the dig, trying our hands at photogrammetry and exploring how we interpret artefacts recovered from test-pitting projects. Finishing off with a talk from the Dig Director, Mathew, about how to bring all these skills together to organise and run a test-pitting project.
