Animated Histories

Animate with Aardman this Summer!

This summer English Heritage is joining forces with the Aardman Academy to explore history and heritage across England through stop motion animation.

From the home of Charles Darwin to forts, factories and castles, there’s a place to spark everyone’s creativity! We invite you to visit these sites and use them, and the many stories found there, as inspiration to create your own stop motion animation film.

Anyone aged 11-25 can get involved. Four English Heritage sites will host professional animators from the multi-award-winning Aardman studios in Summer 2024 (see the list below). You and your family will have the opportunity to learn from professional Aardman creatives at these events  and meet some very familiar characters (who hopefully don’t try to escape!). There will also be the opportunity to take part in a short, introductory workshop and go home with some new skills, inspired to create your own short animated film to share with us!

Animation Displays and Workshops

The Aardman Academy is a training facility based at the world-famous studio’s HQ and is committed to nurturing talent and inspiring the next generation of storytellers. At these special events, you can meet Aardman animators Hannah Brooks and Zoe Hutber who will talk through their process of creating award-winning animations. No booking is required to view the displays but normal site entry fees may apply (please see the site’s webpage for further details).

Each site will host 40-minute workshops that will introduce you to ways of bringing stories and characters to life. Workshops are available for those aged 11-25 and require booking in advance as places are limited. So book quickly to avoid disappointment!

Please note young people aged under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Using freely available kit, materials and apps, Hannah and Zoe will help you develop your skills in paper animation, offering tips and tricks for creative storytelling. You will be able to take a close look at some real Aardman puppets, but you’ll be creating films with everyday items so that you can continue when you get home.

Find the closest site to you below and book onto a workshop now!

If you are not able to visit us in person, there are still plenty of opportunities to get involved. Watch this space for hints, tips and tricks on creating your own stop motion animation films at home and information on our fascinating sites and stories to use as inspiration.

For budding animators there will be the opportunity to submit your own short film for consideration by a panel of Aardman and English Heritage experts who will be looking for the most creatively told, heritage-inspired stories.

Across different age categories, a number of short films will be selected and celebrated by the panel. Selected films will be shared widely across our social media channels and presented with an award.

For talented animators aged 18-25, there is even an opportunity to walk away with a paid, short-story animation commission by English Heritage and professional mentorship from the Aardman Academy. More details to follow!
